Court Reporter Schools in Alaska
Becoming a Court Reporter in AK
Alaska is unique in that court reporters are not used in the traditional courtroom sense; for decades, Alaska’s court proceedings have been recorded electronically. Lawyers do employ them, however, to keep their personal daily records, and courts do use them to provide written transcriptions from the audio recordings after the fact. Major employment sources for court reporters will be centered on Alaska’s larger cities such as Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau, through which a greater number of court cases travel. Court reporter agency jobs are plentiful in these more urban areas. Becoming nationally certified in various areas will be important for obtaining agency court reporting jobs in Alaska, as some require all of their court reporters to be AAERT (American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers) certified, along with being certified to work in both the Alaska court system and the federal court system. Alaskan court reporters can network through the Alaska Shorthand Reporters Association.
