The first step is earning a certificate or associate degree from an accredited court reporter school. Most employers in Indiana will want their court reporters to be certified as a Registered Professional Reporter through the National Court Reporters Association. Court reporting agencies employ many court reporters in Indiana, and they often sub in for the state’s official court reporters on vacation or do legal transcription. While no established guidelines exist in Indiana for required equipment, education or training for official court reporters in the state courts, all must be capable of producing accurate and organized transcriptions for the record. Official court reporters do, however, follow unofficial guidelines written in the Court Reporter Handbook provided by the Indiana Judicial Center.
