Becoming a Court Reporter in MI

Those who wish to become court reporters in the state of Michigan must be licensed with the Court Reporting and Recording Board of Review with the Michigan Supreme Court. Certification is required even of those who transcribe legal proceedings after the fact. Those seeking certification must take a state examination approved by the Board. To qualify for the exam, would-be shorthand court reporters must have completed an accredited higher education program in court reporting and would-be stenomask court reporters must have passed the Certified Verbatim Reporter (CVR) exam through the National Verbatim Reporters Association. If you want to become an official court reporter for the state’s district courts, it is preferred that you have your RPR designation from the National Association of Court Reporters.
